EPS foam has a closed-cell structure, consisting of approximately 98% air and 2% polystyrene (PS) plastic. This structure effectively supports and distributes forces within the material. As a result, EPS foam is lightweight, retains its shape well, can be cut and molded into various forms, and possesses excellent thermal insulation properties. Therefore, EPS foam is widely used in construction, from building thermal insulation to the development of innovative decorative building products.
For safe use, the type of foam used in construction should be selected. Non-flammable grade (Flame Retardant Grade) or often referred to as Grade F foam, is foam that has flame retardants mixed into the plastic material during the raw material manufacturing process. When ignited, the material will shrink, and the flame retardants will help slow the spread of the flames. It can also self-extinguish when the source of the fire is removed or in the case of a small fire. However, this type of foam is not classified as a fire-resistant or fireproof material.
In addition to its flame-retardant properties, foam density is another crucial factor affecting material performance, such as stiffness, compressive strength, and long-term dimensional stability.
